Penguin 4.0 Now Runs on Real Time within the Core Search Algorithm

After the last update in 2014, Google has now revealed the latest update Penguin 4.0 which is running in the real time within the core search algorithm. Originally, it was launched in 2012 with an aim to decrease the Search engine rankings of those websites which were not up to the mark as per Google’s Webmaster guidelines. Later on, it was updated two years back in 2014 for targeting spammy websites. For the Search Engine Optimisation Experts, this update was named as Penguin 3.0 that penalized the websites which had spam links. With the release of Penguin 3.0, many websites saw a major drop in their website traffic overnight. Similar is the case with Penguin 4.0 release.

The launch of this update is basically for Google being ‘more granular’. Here what we mean by ‘more granular’ is that Google will not penalize the whole website now. Rather than penalizing the websites sitewide, the specific web pages will be the target. This Penguin algorithm has been updated in all major languages. Previously, when any update was released by Google for Penguin, it recrawled the whole website to check whether the site was up-to-the guidelines or not. But with this release, there are no chances for any website to get out of SERPs completely.

Two major changes in Penguin 4.0 are –

  1. It is more granular in comparison to the previous versions. Now, the specific web pages will be targeted by the search algorithm rather than the whole website.

  2. Penguin’s data has been refreshed in real-time so the visibility of the changes will be much faster. The results of recrawling and reindexing for the specific web page can be seen shortly via Search Console.

For now, this real-time Penguin update is not fully live. But we assume that Google will announce its launch very soon. If your web pages are regularly revisited by Google, you should likely see the changes in the results with lesser time. But if Google visits your site infrequently, then your results will also take a time to get updated. For your reference, here’s the list of all the Penguin updates –

  1. Penguin 1.0 on April 24, 2012

  2. Penguin 1.1 on May 26, 2012

  3. Penguin 1.2 on October 5, 2012

  4. Penguin 2.0 on May 22, 2013

  5. Penguin 2.1 on Oct. 4, 2013

  6. Penguin 3.0 on October 17, 2014

  7. Penguin 4.0 & real-time on September 23, 2016

I have been waiting for this real time Real Time Google Penguin for months and after the release, I almost felt like the massive Penguin 2.1 in 2013. I personally feel this penguin update may just be a pre-test to check how “Real Time Penguin” will continue to work. Also, the real-time aspect of Google’s Penguin 4.0 can affect different business markets.
